Chapter on Arahants
In one who has completed the journey, is free of sorrow,
has been completely liberated in every way,
and has abandoned all ties,
no fever can be found.
Mindfully they strive upwards,
they do not appreciate settling;
Like swans leaving behind a lake,
they abandon home after home.
Those who have no stockpile,
who have completely understood eating,
whose domain is emptiness
and objectless liberation—
like birds in the sky,
their movement is hard to follow.
One who has completely eliminated their influences
and is not dependent on consumption,
whose domain is emptiness
and objectless liberation—
like birds in the sky,
their path is hard to follow.
One whose faculties are peaceful,
like a horse well-trained by a charioteer,
who has abandoned conceit and is free of influences,
is envied even by the angels.
One who, like the earth, opposes nothing,
who is as stable as a pillar, practicing well,
who is like a lake with no trace of mud—
such beings are not reborn in saṁsāra.
One whose mind is peaceful,
whose speech and actions are peaceful,
and who is liberated through right knowledge—
such a person is at peace.
One who is beyond faith, knows the Unmade,
has severed all ties,
has expelled defilement, and has rejected longing—
this is truly the best person.
Whether it is in a village or in the wilderness,
in lowlands or highlands—
any place where an arahant lives
is a place worth appreciating.
It is possible to appreciate the wilderness areas
that most people do not appreciate;
one who is free of passion will appreciate them,
since they do not seek sensuality.
