Five precepts

Abstain from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, and intoxicants that cause heedlessness.

Five recollections

Frequently recollect aging, illness, death, separation from what is dear, and ownership of one’s kamma.

Four foundations of mindfulness

Observe body, feeling, mind, and phenomena clearly and without clinging.

Five hindrances

Sensual desire, ill will, sloth and torpor, restlessness and remorse, and doubt obstruct clarity and concentration.

Seven awakening factors

Mindfulness, investigation, energy, rapture, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity support awakening.

Four jhānas

Four stages of meditative unification progressively refine rapture, pleasure, equanimity, and mindfulness.
