[page 1] Dhp. 2.21-23 Kuddaka Nikāya The Minor Discourses Dhammapada “The Path to Wisdom that is The Dhamma” Appamāda Vagga “The Section on Diligent Practice” Sāmāvatī Vatthu “Queen Sāmāvatī’s Example” Translated by Bhikkhu Candana Copyright © Bhikkhu Candana 2025 To be diligent means to be on the very Path That takes you straight to The Deathless. Meanwhile, to live without diligence Is to be on the inescapable path to repeated deaths. The ones who live with diligence do not die, Whereas those who are heedless and without any diligence, Are living as though already dead. By understanding the difference between these two, And distinguishing the importance of living with diligence in all that they do, Those who are truly wise rejoice in maintaining it, While making it an essential part of life itself. Therefore, to be and live with full awareness through diligence Is the very pasture that is so delightful, For all those who are declared as Noble Ones, indeed. So, only the wise ones, who make continuous effort By steadfastly persevering in their meditation, Are truly the ones, who come to touch and experience Nibbana, finally; The truly ultimate and incomparable Safety From all things that keep one in bondage.
