Three characteristics
Conditioned things are impermanent and unsatisfactory; all phenomena are not-self.
- Impermanence: conditioned things arise, change, and cease.
- Unsatisfactoriness: what changes cannot provide lasting security.
- Not-self: no phenomenon can rightly be taken as a permanent self or possession.
Seeing these characteristics directly leads to disenchantment, dispassion, and release.
