Four jhānas

Four stages of meditative unification progressively refine rapture, pleasure, equanimity, and mindfulness.

  1. Seclusion, applied and sustained thought, rapture, and pleasure.
  2. Applied and sustained thought subside; unification, rapture, and pleasure remain.
  3. Rapture fades; equanimity, mindfulness, and bodily pleasure remain.
  4. Pleasure and pain are abandoned; mindfulness is purified by equanimity.
