Four jhānas
Four stages of meditative unification progressively refine rapture, pleasure, equanimity, and mindfulness.
- Seclusion, applied and sustained thought, rapture, and pleasure.
- Applied and sustained thought subside; unification, rapture, and pleasure remain.
- Rapture fades; equanimity, mindfulness, and bodily pleasure remain.
- Pleasure and pain are abandoned; mindfulness is purified by equanimity.
